A New Place To Call Home

We have been in our new home nearly 6 months, I have had little time for blogging and we are finally at a point were we can finish out the attic space into the new craft room. I have attached the drawings that I used for the building permit, home owners association approval and pricing.

This first drawing (above) is the floor plan, showing the new dormer window and the two new closets and the electrical outlet locations.
Click Here for a photograph of the existing space.

This drawing shows the ceiling layout, I am planning on using a mixture of recessed can lights and track-like fixtures to position over the dollhouses.  Ceiling fans are a necessity here in Oklahoma in the hot humid summers.  The room will serve at least 3 functions - house my miniature collection, house our hobby area, and serve as a guest bedroom.

Here is a section detail and elevation at the new dormer window, I am excited to see how this will open up the space and add some natural light.  The new window was also a necessity to meet the code as a second way out in case of a fire since the only window in the space is a small non-operable one on the front elevation of the house.

This last drawing shows where the dormer sits in relation to the rest of the house.  It will add a little character to this side of the house which is pretty boring ( and rather close to the neighbors)

I will post more pictures later as the project progresses.  The big question right now is what kind of flooring?  I am leaning towards either laminate or vinyl that looks like wood. I did also see an interesting cork floor.  Let me know what you have on your craft room floors and if it works well!

  2. Hey Troy, the dormer looks amazing on the side of the house. A dormer always adds a lot of light en space to a room. As for flooring well I can't help you there because I have Belgium hard stone flooring in my workspace. The cork floor sounds very interesting and I think they also made them so they look like wooden floors. Looking forward to the progress. Have a great day! gr. AM

    1. Stone flooring sounds pretty durable. This is a second story space above my garage, so I need to keep it lightweight!

  3. Troy, I have craft space envy! Your plans are wonderful! How long do you expect the project to take? I can't wait to see it finished.

    1. The contractor said about 4 weeks. (but he can't start for 2-3 weeks) We are hoping to have it all done before Thanksgiving because we are expecting family and will need another bedroom! Along with the new dormer window, we have to install heat & air, electrical, insulation, drywall, trim - then it I will have paint.

I love your plan and hope someday to be able to create a similar space. Hope you get everything done on schedule. What an exciting project!

  5. Swell design! Impressive forward thinking too. We've always thought of renting out some of our rooms for boarders at some point, yet they would either be inadequate or constrained. Simply put, they weren't built for boarding, as most of these rooms are upon purchase. And the thing about rent spaces is that they will be used for rest AND work, so one can't be haphazard about it. Basically, they can't just be bedrooms. Boarders won't exactly be sharing your study area & vice versa, so this should be dealt with earlier on. And it can only be accounted for by good construction planning, and the wisest tools and means with which to achieve that.

  6. How wonderful to put up the construction plans, i love those type of drawings anyway. But as these show your workspace-to-be i'm even more interested. Are you already setting out your work area etc? You mentioned it would double up as guest bedroom so a pull out bed, or sofa perhaps? How ever you're gonna do it, it's obvious you've put lots of thought into it already so it will turn out great! I'll keep my fingers crossed for you the builder will commence asap.

As for flooring... a very personal taste. One tip though; wether you go for vinyl or laminate... try to go for a plain pattern or non at all. I know that for living spaces it's often chosen so you don't notice the little pieces of dust that are always on your floor (even after you've just vacuumed and mopped!?!?!) But no matter how cautious you are, sometimes pieces drop to the floor. Every now and then, while you've worked for an hour on this little piece that only needs glueing on, it drops and takes a hike. It just seemed to have disappear... Having a bold floor really helps in catching the buggars, and i can tell from experience ;) Fortunately both vinyl and laminate come in all sort of colors and patterns. Good luck with making your choice.
